Southern Green Beans

Slow-simmered green beans with bacon until tender and full of flavor. Not crisp-tender here - we cook 'em right!

🥗 Side Dish Prep: 10 minutes Cook: 1 hour Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs fresh green beans
  • 4 slices thick-cut bacon (chopped)
  • 1 small onion (diced)
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash beans and snap off ends. Break into 2-inch pieces or leave whole.
  2. Cook bacon in a large pot until crispy. Remove and set aside.
  3. Add onion to bacon drippings and cook until softened.
  4. Add green beans and stir to coat in drippings.
  5. Add chicken broth, butter, and sugar.
  6. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
  7. Cover and simmer 45 minutes to 1 hour until beans are tender.
  8. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.
  9. Top with reserved bacon before serving.

💡 Tips & Notes

Southern-style green beans are cooked until completely tender, not crisp. The long simmer with bacon gives them incredible flavor.
