Cheese Grits

Creamy, cheesy grits that are perfect alongside eggs and bacon. Quick enough for any morning.

🍳 Breakfast Prep: 5 minutes Cook: 25 minutes Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 cup stone-ground or quick grits (not instant)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 1/4 cup whole milk or cream
  • White pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Bring water and salt to a boil in a heavy saucepan.
  2. Slowly pour in grits, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  3. Reduce heat to low and cover.
  4. Cook 20-25 minutes (5 minutes for quick grits), stirring often.
  5. Grits should be thick and creamy, not gluey.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in butter until melted.
  7. Add cheese and stir until melted and smooth.
  8. Stir in milk to reach desired consistency.
  9. Season with white pepper.
  10. Serve immediately.

💡 Tips & Notes

Stone-ground grits take longer but have the best corn flavor. Stir often to prevent sticking and lumps!
